Introduction to Intellectual Property

We provide comprehensive, end-to-end support throughout the entire intellectual property (IP) lifecycle to ensure that KAIST’s research outcomes are protected by strong IP rights and translated into real industrial and societal value.

By connecting invention disclosure, patent filing and registration, post-management, and ultimately patent utilization and monetization, we maximize the value of KAIST’s research. Through IP policy and strategy development, patent quality management, strategic portfolio building, and researcher support, we actively pursue the creation and utilization of high-quality patents.

1. Strengthening IP Policies, Strategies, and Quality
- We design and operate IP policies, systems, and quality standards to ensure that KAIST research outcomes develop into strong global IP.
  - Management of regulations and operational systems related to employee inventions, patents, and technology transfer
  - Establishment of criteria for high-quality patents and enhancement of pre- and post-quality management
  - Development of IP strategies tailored to key technologies and core markets
  - Design of systems and processes that strengthen the linkage between research, patents, and commercialization
2. End-to-End IP Management and High-Quality Patent Portfolio Development
- We professionally manage the entire IP lifecycle—from invention disclosure to patent filing, registration, and maintenance—to secure high-value patent portfolios.
  - Invention evaluation and patent filing strategy development
  - Securing high-quality patent specifications through prior-art search and claim-scope design
  - Strategic domestic and international filing, registration, and maintenance
  - Building portfolios focused on fundamental and strategic patents
3. Strengthening Patent Utilization and Monetization
- We enhance models that enable KAIST patents to be actively utilized in industry and generate revenue.
  - Expansion of IP-based revenue models such as technology scouting, patent monetization, and licensing programs
  - Operation of programs for long-term patent utilization and inventor reassignment
  - Strengthening collaboration among faculty/researchers, Technology Licensing Office (TLO), and IP agencies
4. Researcher Support and IP Capability Enhancement
- We provide tailored support to strengthen researchers’ understanding and capability in IP, fostering the continuous creation of high-quality inventions.
  - Patent guides, manuals, and seminars
  - Invention interviews and early-stage patent strategy support for researchers
  - Quality enhancement of filings and registrations through close cooperation with dedicated IP offices
